Ken, fragrance archaeologist

Somebody made this on purpose. I want to know why.

When I smell something, I'm looking for the intention behind it. A specific perfumer picked specific ingredients for a specific reason, and I go on a deep dive until I find it.

Where I started

Enfleurage, New York City

I got my start at Enfleurage, an aromatherapy shop in New York City. That's where I learned naturals from the ground up:

CO2 distillationsAbsolutesPure essential oilsHydrosolsWhere materials are harvestedWhy sustainable sourcing matters

It's why I care where a material comes from, and why a blueberry note has to smell real to win me over.

"Fragrance needs to be described in a way that reveals the true art that lies within the bottle."

What I look for

There's always more to it than what it sprays.

I want the history that made a fragrance what it is.

Small batch or designer, I go looking for the person who made it and what pushed them to make it. Sometimes the story is a sister's memory, a thousand-year-old cedar, or a kid who went home and listened to Barbra Streisand and Broadway musicals with his mom. Yeah, that was me.

Why I travel

A shared obsession with scent

Fragrance people are my people. I go to the expos and the pop-ups to smell what you can't find at the mall, and to sit at the corner table with the perfumers once it finally gets quiet. I'll also walk up to anyone who smells remotely good and ask what they're wearing, because it brightens their day.

I end every video the same way: stay fabulous, sample first.
